Whether
you are looking to sell your home or just looking to spruce up the outside, a
garden is a great addition. A nice, well maintained garden can raise the value
of your property and enhance the look of your yard. Of course gardening in
Central Texas can be tricky. Many plants do not like the heat and you also have
to consider the type of soil you are going to be growing in.
When
looking for plants to put into your garden try to pay attention to plants that
grow wild in your area, as these plants are proven to grow in the environment. A
few flowers that are proven to withstand the heat are the bluebonnet, the
lantana, and sunflowers. Bluebonnets, the state flower, are well proven to grow
in Texas. The blooms are a very pretty blue shade, as their name implies, but
are only in bloom between March and May.
A
stubborn plant, lantana flowers are perennial and tend to grow when no other
plants will. Bloom colors range from pink to yellow and purple. The colors also
have a tendency to change as the plant grows.
Sunflowers,
with their large blooms are perfect choices for background in your garden. They
can grow as tall as nine feet. They need well-draining soil and full sun to
grow properly.
While
finding the best plants for your garden is important you should also consider
any soil amendments you may need to make. Much of the soil in Central Texas is
heavy with clay. You can add sand amendments and other soil types to make it
easier for your plants to grow.
